This is an extravaganza of music, dance, theatre, poetry and handicrafts, which takes place each May. Visitors to the Sabah Fest can expect heat and humidity. Daily highs of 32 degrees are followed by sultry nights of around 25 degrees, and lots of heavy downpours from the first monsoon season of the year.

The annual Malaysia Mega Sales Carnival takes place each year between June and September, and savvy shoppers in Kota Kinabalu will find huge discounts on offer. Dreamed up by the tourist authorities to boost visitor numbers during the sweltering summer months, it seems to have worked - and the city can be packed out during these months. Expect very high temperatures and very high humidity - although the rain tends to fall in short intense bursts rather than lingering all day.

Heat and Humidity

If you visit Kota Kinabalu during the summer months between May and October, you may have to take some time to get used to the heat and humidity. If you need to escape from the heat for a while, the Kinabalu National Park offers lower temperatures - and if you're very lucky, you could even see rafflesia, the world's largest flower, in bloom, giving off a pungent stink of rotting meat!
