Climate in Mexico City
Mexico City has 3 seasons: rainy, dry/warm and dry/cold. From June to October, the city gets a great deal of rain, pushed in by moist sea air. Hail is common and heavy. Temperatures at this time around the mid-20s Celsius, so nowhere near as hot as elsewhere in Mexico. During the rainy season, hotel prices tend to be cheaper, as many tourists are deterred.
Summer in Mexico City
The dry and warm season runs from March to May, with peak temperatures of around 27°C - this tends to be the most popular time for tourists to visit Mexico City.
From November to February, Mexico City experiences polar air masses which send temperatures plummeting. Average temperatures at this time can be as low as 4°C, and the nights are especially chilly. Surrounding peaks will be snow covered, but the city itself very rarely gets snow - once every 20 years or so. Air pollution is at its worst during this cold season, so you may want to take a mask against the smog.
Mexico City's Archaeological Wonders
If you're hoping to visit the pyramids of Tenayuca and Santa Ceclia Acatitlan, the canals of Xochimilco or the site of Teotihuacán, you'll want to avoid the midday sun. March, April and May are the most popular months to visit the archaeological sites, but if you're not a fan of crowds, try a winter visit - the monuments can look extra stunning in the cold sunshine, with far fewer people.
Indoor Attractions
If you're visiting Mexico City during the rainy season, there are plenty of indoor attractions to keep you inspired and entertained. Try a visit to the stunning Metropolitan Cathedral or the National Museum of Anthropology. The Palacio de Bellas Artes is also well worth a visit for the culturally inclined.
Events and Festivals
Mexico City plays host to a wide range of colourful events and festivals, so you may want to plan your visit to coincide with some of these. Cinco de Mayo is always a vibrant time to visit the city, while those who are willing to brave the rain will enjoy the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, which is a colourful blend of Catholic and native Andean traditions. The Day of the Dead on November 1st is also a great choice of festival, and quite unlike anything most Western travellers have seen before.
Finally, don't rule out a December visit to Mexico City, during which you can experience the sights and sounds of the Feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
