Weather Essaouira
Essaouira is a historic city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Known for its wind, it’s a popular destination with watersports enthusiasts, but the city is much more than just its beach. Its fortified walls and narrow alleyways are undeniably Moroccan in flavour, and the old medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Essaouira’s Climate
Essaouira has one of the mildest climates in Morocco, and there is very little temperature change across the seasons. The wind - alizee in the local Berber language - is notoriously strong and in the spring and summer makes it hard to sit on the beach without having sand blown in your face. However, it’s this same wind which makes the city such a favourite with windsurfers and kite surfers.
Essaouira in the Spring
The popular musical Festival des Alizes takes place in the spring, and by and large this is a beautiful time to visit Essaouira. It’s not the place to go for a traditional sun and sand holiday - that wind again - but it is a fascinating time to explore Essaouira’s history and culture.
During March, April and May, you can expect average daily highs of around 18-19°C, with overnight lows of 12°C. Bring summer clothing but perhaps something with long sleeves for the cooler evenings.
Essaouira in the Summer
Essaouira gets very busy in the summer as it’s a popular holiday destination for Moroccans. June, July, August and September see average daily highs of between 20-24°C, with warm evenings too and virtually no rain. June is when the annual Gnaoua festival takes place; a riot of colour, music and culture, with Berber horse races along the beach.
If you’re visiting Essaouira in the summer months, bring lightweight summer clothing and sunscreen.
Essaouira in the Autumn
September and October are the short autumn months in Essaouira. Locals say that October is the best month to visit, as the wind drops a little and the rains add colour and life to the city and its surroundings. It’s also the time of the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques, which celebrates music from around the region.
Pack an umbrella if you’re visiting Essaouira in the autumn; you’ll still need summer weight clothing, however, as average daily highs remain at around 21°C.
Essaouira in the Winter
The winter months in Essaouira are perfect for exploring the nearby countryside, or for whiling away the hours watching the sea pounding the rocks. December, January and February are the wettest months in Essaouira, and you will see rain on approximately one in three days. The wind increases again too, but average daily highs remain very mild at around 18°C, with overnight lows of 12 Celsius.
If you're visiting Essaouira in the winter, take an umbrella and layered clothing to deal with the cooler night time temperatures.
