Hiroshima will be forever known as the first city to be destroyed by a nuclear bomb, in a highly controversial incident in August 1945.
When is the best month to visit Hiroshima-Shi?
The Hiroshima weather can be quite hot and humid in summer (June to early September) and is the best time of year for people who like warmer weather. The colours of the cherry blossoms and leaves during spring and autumn make Hiroshima an attractive location for hikers and people walking through the city parks. Autumn is also the occasion of various cultural festivals which gives culture buffs a chance of seeing traditional Kagura dancing performances.

Hiroshima's Climate
Hiroshima has a humid, subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year, although June and July are the wettest months and the winter months are slightly drier.
Hiroshima in the Spring
Hiroshima in the spring is alive with cherry and other blossoms, and indeed the Peace Park and Hiroshima Castle are known as good spots to view cherry blossoms. Expect average daily highs of 14°C in March, rising rapidly to 24°C in May. Overnight lows can be a chilly 4°C in March, but have risen to 14oc by May.
Spring showers are common, so take an umbrella. Layered clothing is best if you're visiting Hiroshima in the spring months, to account for the changeable temperatures.
Hiroshima in the Summer
June, July and August can be extremely hot and humid in Hiroshima. Daily temperatures can climb well over 30°C and sometimes closer to 40°C. There's not all that much relief at night either, with overnight lows of a sticky 24oc.
The rain is quite heavy in June and July, with around 10 inches falling in each month. The high humidity can make it feel rather uncomfortable and so most tourists avoid the summer months in Hiroshima. However, the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony on the 6th August does attract large crowds.
If you intend to visit Hiroshima in the summer, bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes. It's too hot for a waterproof jacket, however, but do bring many changes of lightweight clothing.
Hiroshima in the Autumn
September is typhoon season in Hiroshima, and these storms can be severe enough to keep tourists confined to their hotels for days. October and November are great months to visit the city, however, as temperatures are more pleasant and the worst of the rain has passed. Expect daily high temperatures of around 18-22°C, but nights start to become a little chilly in November.
Hiroshima in the Winter
December, January and February are cool in Hiroshima, with average daily temperatures of around 9 or 10oc and nights just above freezing. It's relatively dry, however, and the days are often clear and quite bright, so it's a good time for sightseeing if you don't mind feeling the cold.

What to pack and wear in Hiroshima-Shi?
The summer weather in Hiroshima is hot and on occasion humid, so unless visitors plan on spending most of their time here in air-conditioned malls, lightweight casual clothing will suffice. Shorts and a t-shirt will do when exploring parks, museums or going to beaches. Visitors in autumn and spring will need warmer clothes, a cagoule and long trousers, as protection against winds and rainfall. Winter visitors should pack thick clothes, good shoes and an overcoat.
