Matsumoto has a humid subtropical climate - in practice, this means very hot, humid summers and very cold winters with plenty of snow.
Matsumoto in Winter
Heavy snowfall turns Matsumoto into a picture postcard scene during the winter months. This is a popular time to visit the many onsen (hot springs) in and around the city - in particular, the “snow monkey onsen” at nearby Yudanaka, where monkey enjoy the hot springs just as much as the people do!
Expect average daily highs of around 5-6°C, with overnight lows of around -10°C throughout the winter months. Snowfall is at its heaviest in January and February, so take warm winter clothing, boots and a hat.
Matsumoto in Spring
Matsumoto is slow to warm up after its cold winter - snowfall is still common in March, but by April average daily highs are around 17°C and the cherry blossom season is in full swing. Spring is a popular time to visit Matsumoto because of the pretty blossoms and because the heat is not yet oppressive.
Average daily highs in May reach the mid 20s Celsius, but nights can still be chilly well into spring, so bring something with long sleeves. Bring an umbrella too, as spring showers can be heavy and prolonged.
Matsumoto in Summer
Summers in Matsumoto can be stifling. The average daily high is 30°C but temperatures are often much closer to 40°C, with overnight lows in the low 20s Celsius. Humidity is high and rainfall is heavy, with July being the wettest month of the year.
If you visit Matsumoto in summer, take lightweight summer clothing and waterproof shoes, plus an umbrella. If the heat becomes too much, take a day trip into the surrounding mountains where the air will be considerably cooler.
Matsumoto in Autumn
Early autumn is very mild in Matsumoto - September daily highs average 25°C - but September and October see a lot of rain. By the time November arrives, the temperatures are cooling off and the weather becomes a lot drier. Expect daily highs of 13°C in November, with overnight lows close to freezing.
Since the autumn weather is so unpredictable, it's a good idea to take layered clothing if you're visiting Matsumoto in the autumn.
