Weather Chongqing

Chongqing is found in southwest China and is one of the four directly controlled municipalities in the People’s Republic of China.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-45) Chongqing was the wartime capital of China and is the economic centre for the area upstream in the Yangtze basin functioning as a manufacturing centre and transportation hub.

Spring and winter are generally seen as the best time to visit Chongqing as the weather allows for lower levels of fog, lower humidity and temperatures and low levels of rainfall. This means that it is the perfect time to get out and see the city without having to worry about the effects of the extremely high summer temperatures.

Chongqing has a sub-tropical monsoon climate and experience extremely mild weather with the average annual temperature being around 18 degrees Celsius, though there are high levels of rainfall due to the monsoons.

Fog is a big problem in Chongqing and is mostly attributed to the large amounts of manufacturing that occur in the city. The cities of Chongqing, Nanjing and Wuhan are known as the three furnace cities due to the sweltering summer temperatures that can reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

There are four distinct seasons in Chongqing, unstable spring with changeable temperatures and strong winds, sweltering summer with high temperatures, wet and windy autumn with temperature drops and an “Indian Summer” in October/November and finally cold winters that are rarely filled with snow and frost.

If you are visiting in the summer months then light clothing as well as high factor sun cream is advisable to take with you as well as plenty of bottled water if you are going to be out and about in the city.

For winter and spring it is recommended that you take lots of warm clothing with you. In spring the temperatures can peak quite suddenly so some light clothing should also be packed but you should be prepared for anything.

As the climate is fairly wet, making sure you have wet weather clothing with you or an umbrella is a good idea.
