Weather Suzhou

Suzhou is a prefecture level city in the Jiangsu Province in eastern China and is adjacent to the Shanghai Municipality. The city can be found on the banks of the Yangtze River and the shores of the Taihu Lake and stands on the Yangtze River Delta.

Suzhou is well known for its beauty and historical relics due to its importance in several dynasties including the Eastern Han, Song, Ming and Qing.

When is the best month to visit Suzhou?

Suzhou is best visited in either spring or autumn due to the mild temperatures, low humidity and less rainfall than during either the summer or the winter. There are number of festivals held all year round in Suzhou to help encourage tourism including the West Hill Plum Blossom Festival, the Tiger Hill Flower Festival, the Luzhi Apparel Cultural Tourist Festival, the Tiger Hill Fair, the Tianping Hill Red Maple Art Festival and the Festival of Listening to the Bell of the Cold Mountain Temple on New Year’s Eve.

Suzhou’s Climate

Suzhou has a subtropical climate, with four seasons and two distinct rainy periods. The first comes in March while the second, the poetically named Plum Rains, comes in late June to July.

Suzhou in Spring

Spring is the most favoured time of year for visiting Suzhou, mainly because the stunning World Heritage cited gardens are in full bloom and at their most spectacular. Between March and May, you can expect average daytime temperatures of between 9°C and 20°C.

If you’re visiting in March, take an umbrella, as this is one of the wettest months of the year. April and May are relatively dry, however, and you would be unlucky to catch a short spring shower during those months.

Nights in early spring can be chilly, so take a sweater or something with long sleeves.

Suzhou in Summer

Summer in Suzhou is hot and humid, with average daily highs rising to 30°C in August. The plum rains in July provide some relief from the heat in the form of welcome downpours, but a visit to Suzhou in the summer can be a sticky and uncomfortable experience if you’re not used to heat and high humidity.

High overnight temperatures make sleeping difficult, so if you’re visiting Suzhou in the summer, pack very lightweight clothing and allow yourself time to acclimatise.

Suzhou in Autumn

Autumn is a good time to visit Suzhou because the worst of the summer heat has dissipated and the autumn colours are beautiful in the famous gardens. Expect average daily highs of 26°C in September, falling to 13°C in November.

Autumn starts off quite wet, but November is the driest month of the year, so you probably won’t need to pack an umbrella for a late autumn visit to Suzhou.

Suzhou in Winter

Winter nights in Suzhou can be very chilly, with winds blowing in from Siberia. Daytime temperatures hover between 4 and 7°C, so cool but not overly cold. Winter is quite a dry time of year, with the lowest humidity through the year. This brings clear, crisp skies, which can make a beautiful backdrop for exploring this ancient city and all it has to offer. Even the famous gardens, in their winter dormant state, offer stark and spectacular vistas to enjoy, while the temples and other attractions will be much less crowded than during spring.

What to pack and wear in Suzhou?

If you are visiting Suzhou during the summer you will need to be prepared for rain, whether that means simply carrying an umbrella or waterproof coat to keep you dry. In the hot summer months light clothing is more than enough, though in winter, especially in January you will need lots of thick winter clothing to cope with the cold both inside and outside. In spring and autumn long clothing is sensible to bring as well as warmer layers to cope with the changes in temperature.
